Yesterday morning I got up early and packed everything for a day or potentially two at the ocean, which is about 20 km s away from Magescq. I hoped to get there by bicycle within 2 hours or less. But stepping out of my apartment, I thought I would go crazy. It rained again !. Like last Monday. I was so disappointed. I couldn’t believe it and was wondering how to spend the day in Magescq with all its attractions, which would not result in a real vacation day. Maybe I could walk between the boulangerie, the post office and the café. But that would be finished after 3 minutes …. Then I decided to be optimistic instead, hope for a wheather change and jump on the public bus, that would bring me within an hour to the beach as well. What a good intuition ! The rain had stopped and the sun came out, once I reached the town of Vieux-Boucau with its beach.
The first thing I did was scanning the hotels near the beach and then booked one night. This would guarantee to make the the most of my last 1.5 days off for a while. The high season is starting next week for the Relais de la Poste, and for 3 weeks there will be no more full days off, only mornings from time to time, as I understood.
The beaches in this region are quite different from the ones in Provence and the Cote d’Azur. Typical for the Cote d’Argent, the atlantic coast line in the southwest of France between Arcachon and Hossegor are wide sandy beaches sheltered by high sand dunes and an immense pine forest.
The waves are quite powerful so the area attracts many surfers. I took the picture this morning around 9 a.m., when the beach was still empty except for this class of surfboard beginners, who had to practice the typical movement first in the sand, before going for the first time into the real waves.
Now I am back in Magescq, had a salad for lunch in the little café on the main street corner. I have kept the same habits as in Paris, spending free time preferably with a salad or/and a café in a street café terrace. With the difference that in Magescq there is no choice. Today I got my first free café offered, probably a sign that I have become their most frequent customer.
Today is also an important anniversary for me. Exactly one year ago, July 31st 2006, was my last day working at HP. I had been in charge of helping the company’s European sales force to increase PC sales, a job called officially business development manager. While HP had always been and still is a great company, probably the only one I’d ever work for in the industry, my job hadn’t made sense to me any more for a while. At the same time the dream of creating a bistro or a culinary B&B had become more and more dominant over the years. And so today, one year after correcting the last European PC sales forecast I am part of the brigade of a 2-Michelin-star restaurant. How about that ! And while it was and still is much different and harder than expected, I don’t want to go back. The only desire I have is to move on and learn as much as possible in a short time, to be able to run my on little place as soon as possible.
And now : back to cleaning mushrooms and wiping plates (hopefully I’ll get a new assignment tomorrow). Dinner shift starts at 5 p.m. …
