1) What is this and what happened here when and why is it a shame that a German got the yellow jersey today ?
(I took the picture today. Eventually summer, after 2 months of rain and November temperatures).

Oh, I finally got a clue. It's the bastille and was the location of an uprising in 1789. In 1780, there was a small memorial celebration marking the first anniversary . Subsequent celebrations eventually led to July 14th being marked as France's national day.
French TdF riders generally try really hard to place first on 14 July, but this year they failed.
